From Silent Films to Modern Hospitality
Gem’s Alehouse & Woodfired Kitchen is housed in the historic McLaughlin House. The restaurant honors the legacy of the original Gem Theater, Greencastle’s first motion picture theater, which opened its doors in 1910. Named after “Gemma,” the granddaughter of the original owner, the theater began with silent films before introducing the community to the first “talkies” in 1928. Over the decades, the stage welcomed vaudeville performances, live entertainment, and local musicians, becoming a gathering place for generations of Greencastle residents.
Today, Gem’s Alehouse & Woodfired Kitchen continues that tradition of hospitality, community, and entertainment by blending historic charm with handcrafted food, woodfired cooking, and a warm neighborhood atmosphere.
